8 Former SaW Athletes Drafted in 2017 MLB Draft

Special congratulations to seven former SaW athletes (Cory Abbott, Lucas Gilbreath, Ricky Tyler Thomas, Fred Schlichtholz, Reagan Biechler, Ryan Wilson, James Notary, and Patrick Bailey) for being drafted in the 2017 MLB Draft.   • (2017 Draft) Cory Abbott from Loyola Marymount University (CA) was selected in the 2nd round by the Chicago Cubs.
  • (2017 Draft) Lucas Gilbreath from Legacy High School (CO) and the University of Minnesota (MN) was selected in the 7th round by the Colorado Rockies. He was selected in the 36th round of the 2014 draft (1073 overall) also by the Colorado Rockies out of high school but did not sign. Gilbreath held a 1.45 ERA and 6-2 record as a senior. He pitched four complete games, including a 12-strikeout shutout. Gilbreath struck out a Colorado Class 5A-leading 111 batters on the season after leading with 93 strikeouts as a junior in 2013.
  • (2017 Draft) Ricky Tyler Thomas from Fresno State University (CA) was selected in the 7nd round by the Chicago Cubs.
  • (2017 Draft) Fred Schlichtholz from Fresno State University (CA) was selected in the 13th round by the San Diego Padres.
  • (2017 Draft) Reagan Biechler from Wichita State University (KS) was selected in the 31st round by the Colorado Rockies.
  • (2017 Draft) Ryan Wilson from Pepperdine University (CA) was selected in the 33st round by the Baltimore Orioles.
  • (2017 Draft) James Notary from Texas Christian University (TX) was selected in the 35th round by the Colorado Rockies.
  • (2017 Draft) Patrick Bailey from Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC) was selected in the 37th round by the Minnesota Twins. Patrick is a NC State University commit.
  • (2016 Draft) Alex Schick is a 6'7 210 lb LHP from the University of California- Berkeley and Cathedral Catholic (CA).  He was selected in the 6th round by the Minnesota Twins. He was also selected in the 17th round of the 2013 draft by the Houston Astros out of high school but did not sign.
  • (2016 Draft) Nate Sweeney is a 6'3 170 lb RHP from the Cherry Creek (CO).  He was selected in the 33rd round by the Chicago Cubs. Nate is a University of Arizona commit.
  • (2016 Draft) Cory Voss is a 5'10 195 lb Catcher from the University of New Mexico and Pueblo South High School (CO). He was selected in the 37th round by the Washington Nationals. He was also selected in the 34th round by Colorado Rockies in the 2014 draft out of high school as well, but did not sign. He hit. 469 with four home runs and 22 RBIs as a high school Senior
  • (2015 Draft) Jacy Cave is an OF from Piedra Vista High School (NM).  He was selected in the 19th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks after two years at New Mexico Junior College.
  • (2015 Draft) Josh Roeder is a RHP from Porter Ridge High School (NC). He was selected in the 21st round by the New York Yankees after setting the all-time saves record at the University of Nebraska.
  • (2015 Draft) Brent Schwarz is a RHP from Regis Jesuit High School (CO).  He was selected in the 39th round (1,157 overall) by his hometown Colorado Rockies.  Brent is a Rice University commit.
  • (2014 Draft) Max George is a 5'9 180 lb SS from Regis Jesuit High School (CO).  He was selected in the 6th round (173 overall) by his hometown Colorado Rockies.  Max is an Oregon State University commit.  He was named the Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year award after he hit .458 and led his team to the Class 5A state championship game.
  • (2014 Draft) Spencer Sundahl is a 6'1 185 lb Catcher from East Lake High School (CA).  He was selected in the 28th round by the Baltimore Orioles.  Spencer is a University of California- Davis commit and has declined the selection and will attend the University of California-Davis.
